Introduction
It’s going to be my birthday soon, and that means people are going to want to sing that same old birthday song to me. You know the one: “Happy Birthday to You.” Honestly, I don’t want to hear it anymore. It’s been done to death. It’s time for a new song. If you’re into the classics, sure, go ahead and sing “Happy Birthday” to each other, but don’t sing it to me. I’m sick of it.
A Fresh Alternative
I have an alternative song that I would rather you sing to me on my birthday. It goes like this:
“Away in the manger, no crib for a bed
Little Jim Larsen laid down his sweet head
The stars in the sky looked down where he lay
Little Jim Larsen, asleep in the hay.”
If you want to sing that to anyone else, feel free to change the name appropriately. But please, no more “Happy Birthday” to me. Sing what you want to each other; I’m not against it. I just want something new and different for myself. I’m a progressive person and I like to move forward. I don’t want to stay stuck in the past.
Why the Change?
I don’t even know where the “Happy Birthday” song came from. I don’t know who wrote it or if they intended it to become this ubiquitous thing that we in the Western world are so obsessed with. It’s always the same. I think it’s time to mix it up a little bit.
Conclusion
So, on my next birthday, let’s break away from the norm. Sing that alternative birthday song instead of the same old same old one. It’s fresh, different, and a great way to move forward from the old traditions.
